What is Happiness?

The oxford dictionary defines happiness as a state of being happy.

This is something unclear, right?

Let’s make it clearer.

Happiness is a state of showing or feeling pleasure or self-contentment.

Let’s connect and see happiness in terms of Bliss and Joy:

  • Bliss might be a state, not a quality; at the end of the day, is anything but an enduring, perpetual element or character characteristic, yet an all the more transient, alterable state.
  • Joy is likened with feeling delight or satisfaction, implying that joy isn’t to be mistaken for happiness, rapture, euphoria, or other increasingly extreme sentiments.
  • Bliss are regularly either feeling or appearing, implying that happiness isn’t really an indoor or outer experience, yet it is frequently both.

Much Clear right?

Let’s now focus on ways to find symbols of Happiness:

  • Focus on content that keeps you entertained:

Try to Watch only those Movies and Tv Series that keep you happy and entertained. Entertainment is something that we take lightly, without looking at what we are consuming.

For Example, if you wake up early in the morning and watch that is full of terror, will that not have an impact on how you feel during the day?

Keep things that keep yourself happy remove or do not focus on other unimportant stuff. If you use snapchat, you can keep a private story. Give it good private story names, by doing so your story will be visible only to people who you actually want.

It would. In fact, there will come a time when you can judge yourself upon it.

So, you should always stay away from content that’s not healthy for consumption.

  • Exercise more:

There are a lot of studies that prove that Exercising keeps your brain in a good state of mind.

In fact, I will go further by telling you that Exercising is proven to release good mood endorphins which in turn make you feel happy and give the sense of happiness.

This is why whenever you do a nice workout session, you are always in a good mood. If due to certain circumstances you are unable to exercise just do a walk around your neighbourhood.

But hey, why would you believe me in the first place?

Let me prove myself, with a study that University of Toronto did.

They analysed no less than 25 research studies. The conclusion was that physical activity can and does help to keep depression at bay.

Yet another best study I happen to know is where three groups of depressed people are put on a regime of anti-depressants, exercise or a combination of the two.

No surprise to know that all three groups were happier, but did it last?

Six months later, the group who had been treated with exercise only, had a very low relapse rate of 9%. The other two groups had relapsed and how! Their rates were ranging from 38% to 31%, so about a third of them were now depressed again.

So, you should try to exercise regularly to help yourself find Key to happiness.

  • Value Experience over Possession

We should always value Experience to find happiness and contentment. Always look at the time and the growth you did while possessing something. If you compare your possession by looking at someone else’s possessions, it can be misleading and can also ruin your state of mind. Thereby having an impact on Happiness.

Comparing possessions of others and looking at better material items after purchase of an inferior one can be demoralizing. This will also ruin the initial pleasure we got when purchasing and taking possession of that for example, a new car, TV or a computer.

  • Say No to negative thoughts

Some people keep on overthinking by only focusing on their negative thoughts and that they have real problems in getting obviate them.

A University of Madrid study found that by actually writing these thoughts down on a bit of paper then destroying them was effective. They recommended that you simply either tear them up, throw them within the trash or burn them!

The fact of discarding them physically does help in reducing their toxic effects. Psychologists suggest doing this on a daily basis.

It is rightly said, focus on the Good and it will Grow.

  • The Right Sleep

By the right sleep, I mean that you should have an optimum amount of sleep. While Sleeping to little can be a bad symbol for happiness. Same is oversleeping.

If you oversleep a lot, try to think of the things that are bothering you, talk them out with someone. If its something that you cannot talk out with everyone, try to write it down on a piece of paper. Researchers say that it helps.

Try to keep your sleep hours fixed, this will take up a lot of work, but if you implement it the right way, this can become one of the biggest key of happiness.


All the methods discussed above are proven. They have a lot of impact in finding the symbols of happiness. The key to happiness is living a life where you don’t expect much but instead do all that you can.
