When choosing a diet pill it is important to understand what you are getting. There are lots of different types, and each works in a different way. Non prescription diet pills generally contain caffeine, which increases heart rate and basal metabolism and gives you more energy in work outs, which can be quite effective in weight loss.
Once these pills contained ephedra, which strengthened the effect on the heart rate and metabolism, but the FDA banned it in 2003 after proof that ephedra occasionally caused arrhythmia and sudden death. Now most non prescription diet pills use green tea, which seems to have an effect on the metabolism and also slows fat production, or bitter orange, which is a chemical isolated from citrus fruit. Other common ingredients include ”herbal ephedra” which is often a plant called hoodia, and chitosan, which is produced from shellfish and is a mild fat blocker.

Prescription diet pills

Prescription diet pills are generally more effective, and require medical supervision because they can have side effects.
There are several types of commonly used prescription diet pills, and each one has a different mechanism of weight loss. One of the oldest and best known of the prescription diet pills is phentermine, a diet pill which works by mimicking brain neurotransmitters so that the brain gets the message that the body is full. Phentermine diet pills, also known as Adipex-P or Fastin, are thought to be the safest diet pills, and have almost no side effects as long as they are not mixed with other drugs.

In the past phentermine diet pills were one of the components in the Phen-Fen combination, until the other component was banned by the FDA  for similar reasons to the ban on ephedra, but phentermine itself still has FDA approval.
There are several other types of prescription diet pills which work on the same principle as phentermine, among them sibutramine, or Meridia, and diethylpropion, or Tenuate. Some people respond better to one of these than to the original phentermine diet pill for individual metabolic reasons, and it is always worth trying the different types.

Another mechanism used by some prescription diet pills is fat blocking, and Xenical, for instance, works in this way. These diet pills work by blocking the effect of fat digesting enzymes so that fat is not absorbed into the body and passes straight through. This type of treatment can have unpleasant side effects in people who have a large percentage of fat in their diet, because it can cause diarrhoea and stomach aches, so usually doctors advise to cut back on fat consumption while taking prescription diet pills of this type.
Several drugs which were developed for use against depression and epilepsy are showing promise as diet pills,
and some doctors already prescribe them for this use, Prozac being the best known example. Topomax is another psychiatric drug now often used off label as a diet pill, and seems to be very effective, but it is important to use these and all prescription diet pills wisely. Always get your doctors approval before using any diet pills, and ask for regular check ups while you are taking them, in order to diet safely without endangering your health.
